Miniature donkeys originated on the Mediterranean islands of Sardina and Sicily, where they were historically used as work animals. They were first imported to the United States in 1929 by Robert Green and have since become very popular as companion animals, particularly in America and the UK. Today, the breed is nearly extinct in its native land, but its population is growing in other countries due to breeding programs.
